Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to discuss why the 2010 movie You Again Should’ve Been Gay.

This film has an incredible cast and the gayest premise ever, but somehow manages to miss the mark entirely. We watched it, so you don’t have to. With stars like Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Kristin Chenoweth, and Betty White, we had higher hopes for this movie. The premise includes many of the typical gay tropes like the notorious ‘there’s only one bed’ situation and the inherent queerness of the archenemy, but never follows through. The multigenerational gay trauma of the two main families is a lot to unpack and does not have a satisfying resolution. The film is hindered by too much male gaze and unrealistic depictions of how women actually interact with each other. For a film that could easily give us three generations of queer women ships, it suffers from not seeing any of them through. If the movie had been gay, 99% of the flaws would’ve been avoided.
